School of Trades & Technology 2024 Awards

The School of Trades and Technology at 51视频 is excited to host its annual awards nights where over 160 students will receive awards in the presence of family, friends and donors.

The annual听School of Trades and Technology听Awards ceremony recognizes the remarkable contributions and achievements of Camosun students who听are celebrated not only for their academic success but for the significant contributions they make to in the classroom and the community.

"These awards are a testament to the hard work and passion of Camosun students," says Eric Sehn, Dean of the School of Trades and Technology " The skills and knowledge we're celebrating today are the building blocks of tomorrow鈥檚 progress."

Jason demonstrated true dedication to his education. He was often the last person in the class at the end of the day, and he made it his goal to work through and overcome the challenges presented. Jayson Freele

Coast Salish Employment Training Society Awards

Donated by Coast Salish Employment Training Society

Awarded to an Indigenous student in any Trades program who demonstrates commitment to the Trade of their choice.

Jason is committed to being a great carpenter. He is never the first to leave, always staying late to help colleagues who need it. One time, his car broke down on a quiz day. Despite the setback, he scrambled to make arrangements for himself and his carpool mates to get to school on time and take the test. There鈥檚 no "phoning it in" for someone like Jason.

Awarded to one or more students with an all around good performance in the Plumbing or Carpentry Foundation programs.

Thomas approaches carpentry with curiosity and kindness. He asks the right questions at the right times and moves forward appropriately. He was an indispensable member of all group projects and excelled in individual ones as well. Way to go, Thomas!

FortisBC Indigenous People in Trade Foundation Award

Nam Yi Kang

Curriculum听Building Capacity for Women in Red Seal Trades Awards

Awarded to female students who have completed Trades Foundation level training and have shown leadership, dedication and a willingness to help break down barriers and be part of the positive shift for women in the trades.

Nam Yi began her journey at Camosun as part of our ELD programming and later discovered the Women in Trades Sampler. She has since completed her Carpentry foundation. Leveraging her extensive experience, determination, and positive attitude, Nam Yi has forged a path forward for herself in Canada.

Carpentry Foundation Program Award

Awarded to a graduating student in the Carpentry Foundation Program with the highest overall combined theory and practical marks.

Sergio showed up and worked hard every day. On top of that, he quietly chased perfection. No fuss or drama. If something was laid out or cut wrong, he would recalculate and do it perfectly the second time. Congratulations, Sergio.

Carpentry is a somewhat new career for Heather. In the classroom and shop, she contributed as both a leader and a competent carpenter. Awarded to a student who made time to help others succeed.

Piotr has a sharp eye for detail, a willingness to learn, and is tenacious. One time, he was ahead on a project and was doing well with it. Despite being 鈥渁head,鈥 he routinely stayed after class, helping others get their projects up to a similar stage. When asked why he would stay late when he didn鈥檛 need to, his response was simply, 鈥淲e are a team. The work鈥檚 not done until we are all done.鈥 That is Piotr鈥檚 character in a nutshell.

Steph鈥檚 work ethic and commitment to the trade are truly top-notch. Throughout her time at Camosun, she has always worked incredibly hard and achieved very high-end results. During her most recent term, Steph was asked to mentor less experienced first-year students, and she did so very honorably. Hats off to you, Steph! Keep up the fantastic work.

This award is in recognition of a female student in the Trade Foundation program who has demonstrated teamwork, respect, and safety in class.

Marie can鈥檛 help but approach every project with an abundance of creative energy. She has incorporated novel finishes into many of her projects, and experiments with new ways of doing things. In addition to focusing on the finishing aspect of her project work throughout the program, she earned the top marks for the finish samples project.

Awarded to the top student in the Fine Furniture/Joinery Program.

Nick came into the program with a strong working knowledge of woodworking, and has worked hard to continually refine his skills. He sets exceptionally high standards for his work, which has pushed him to create pieces that are at a professional level. Nick鈥檚 academic work is always completed to a high standard, this combined with exceptional results on his practical projects has earned him the top student award.

Marie-Claude Bleau

Columbia Industrial Supplies Award

Donated by Columbia Industrial Supplies Inc.

Awarded to a student who displays an interest in wood finishing, and completes a wood finishing project using a variety of techniques to a high standard.

Marie is highly dedicated to learning the craft of furniture making and completes every assignment and project to the highest standard. She consistently works to develop a deeper understanding of the lessons, often asking her instructor about nuances and details. Marie is driven and highly motivated to learn, showing deep focus and concentration in completing all of her shop projects to a very high standard. Additionally, she finds time to complete other personal projects, such as a red and yellow cedar canoe paddle, which enhance her learning.

Awarded to a Fine Furniture Student who shows strength in the design component of the course and has worked to incorporate local, sustainable materials and environmentally friendly finishing products into their work.

Trever鈥檚 design work throughout the program has been exemplary. He has produced original and creative projects that integrate concepts taught in class with his own style. Trever鈥檚 hard work and overall marks for design projects has earned him this award.

Jessica Giebelhaus

Awarded to a student who has demonstrated interest and ability in the field of Horticulture.

Jessica possesses an insatiable desire for learning, not only about plants, but anything related to them, inside and out! She consistently sat at the front of the class and during field trips or site visits, you could always find Jessica alongside the host, listening intently and asking thoughtful questions 鈥 her mind always a few steps ahead. Her enthusiasm, positive energy, and infectious smile were like a beacon in the class. Jessica's patience and thoughtfulness made her a great mentor for others. Recently, Jessica partnered with another student to compete in the Trades BC Skills competition in April for Landscape Horticulture, where they were awarded the Bronze Medal! Congratulations, Jessica! We wish you all the best and have no doubt that you will achieve great success in your future pursuits.

Erin is a quiet leader with a passion for the conservation and rehabilitation of farming or gardening systems, with a keen interest in building and maintaining soil health and vitality. Erin set high standards for herself, and would take on any new challenges, even those which felt very uncomfortable (like those tall ladders!). Throughout the year, Erin exemplified a natural talent for design, an avenue which she wishes to pursue further. We wish Erin all the best and know she will find success with her future endeavors.

Saanich Fruit Growers Association Award Horticultural Studies

Awarded to a student with high academic standing and a genuine passion for growing food. Priority will be given to a student with a special interest in fruit growing.

Judy consistently arrived early, displaying preparedness, an open mind, and a positive demeanor, earning her widespread popularity among classmates. She exemplified a strong work ethic by exceeding expectations in assignments, sharing study resources, and actively engaging in hands-on horticultural tasks. The Rodger Hargreaves Memorial Award is presented to an outstanding South Island Partnership student who successfully completes level 2 training.

This award is to promote the development of female leaders through education by recognizing women studying in a Trades program who display outstanding leadership qualities.

Claire excelled during her Level 2 apprentice training earlier this year, with perfect attendance, the highest marks in the class, and a most positive attitude. She clearly demonstrated leadership qualities in both the class and the shop, always willing to assist her classmates with challenging tasks while maintaining a high level of respect for their abilities. Her enthusiasm for the trade was amplified by her interactions with the female students in our Foundation class, offering them encouragement and sharing insights into the opportunities available to them in the automotive industry. On her way to becoming a technician, Claire has also honed her metalworking skills, establishing herself as a standout talent at one of Victoria鈥檚 premier automotive restoration shops. With her infectious enthusiasm and positivity, along with a blend of skills and leadership qualities that set her apart, Claire is a truly deserving recipient of the Minerva BC Champions Women in Trades Award.

Chris's journey at 51视频 in the summer of 2023 was marked by unwavering dedication to automotive studies. Despite the logistical challenge of commuting from Salt Spring Island, Chris managed to excel in all facets of the program, with commitment to the trade evidenced by exceptional performance demonstrated in the classroom and shop, achieving an overall grade of 95 per cent. Additionally, Chris's understanding of automotive technology shone through in the final standardized level examination, with the highest grade in the class. In recognition of dedication and remarkable accomplishments, we are honored to present Chris with this award.

As an instructor I found Andrew to be enthusiastic, polite and always ready to get started on the next topic in the classroom or the shop. Andrew鈥檚 contributions to group conversations were well thought out and a valuable source of information to the class. His focus and dedication earned him an overall final mark of 89 per cent. To be successful in the automotive trade you must be able to understand and apply information, but you also need to source it. Keenan has a tremendous ability to source information and, in some cases, has found information incorrect or missing from the textbook. His focus and dedication earned him an overall final mark of 91 per cent. Well done Keenan!

Specializing in European vehicles, Dustin is very detail oriented and able to interpret complex instructions and apply them to the task at hand. Awarded to a Heavy Duty Mechanic Foundation student who demonstrates attention to safety, shows interest for sustainability, displays strong teamwork, is helpful and polite, demonstrates integrity and has shown community involvement.

Matt was an exceptional student who prioritized safety in the shop and served as a leader among his peers. He consistently assisted the instructor and his classmates when needed, demonstrating both initiative and teamwork. In group settings, Matt naturally assumed a leadership role, ensuring that tasks were completed correctly. His perfect attendance not only made him a role model for other students but also made him a reliable team member whom everyone could depend on.

BC Transit Emerging Female Leader in Trades Training, Heavy Duty Mechanic Award

Awarded to a female Heavy Duty Mechanic Apprentice student who demonstrates attention to safety, shows interest for sustainability, displays strong teamwork, is helpful and polite, demonstrates integrity and has shown community involvement.

Jenna has made significant progress in her journey in the Truck and Transport trade, demonstrating dedication and commitment to her training. Additionally, she has made positive contributions during her Level 1 apprentice course in January, showcasing her willingness to learn and contribute to the success of her class.

Marc Van Der Wal

Victoria Midas Award

Awarded to a Automotive Technician apprentice that has demonstrated enthusiasm and determination to achieve a high level of competence as an automotive service technician.

Marc started his journey to become an automotive technician after completing an engineering degree program. Since his start in the Foundation program it was evident that his focus on learning and ability to understand complex theories was at a very high level. He completed Level 4 of his apprentice training in December 2023 with an outstanding grade of 93 per cent. His concentrated effort in the final year of his Red-Seal training was excellent, and the skills he demonstrated in the shop reinforced the level of understanding and ability he's achieved. It has been great to see Marc's knowledge and abilities grow over the years, he is a very deserving recipient of the Victoria Midas Award. Congratulations Marc.

Jacob completed the Automotive Foundation Program in September 2023 with a final mark of 94 per cent. With a background in robotics, Jacob was always enthusiastic to take on a new challenge. In addition to completing his workshop task book Jacob was able to repair a vintage Volkswagen gasoline fired heater that was donated to 51视频 many years ago. It took research, time and patience but Jacob worked through all of the challenges and failures to see the project through to a successful outcome.

Growing up on the plains of Saskatchewan, one wouldn't expect Spencer to pursue a career in the maritime trades. However, Flatlanders have a reputation for being skilled sailors, perhaps due to their strong work ethic or comfort with vast horizons. Spencer defied expectations by joining the Canadian Coast Guard, where he rose swiftly from Ordinary Seaman to Bosun鈥檚 Mate. During the past three years, he has dedicated his time off to diligently studying for his Watchkeeping Mate certification. Spencer is enthusiastic about his next career move of becoming a Deck Officer, eager to continue his passion for maritime life on the great blue plain.

Richard's upbringing in Port Alberni involved extensive fishing, shaping his early years. He gained experience with the Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) before pursuing further education at 51视频, where he completed the bridgewatch program. Since 2021, Richard has been employed with BC Ferries. Recently, he has returned to Camosun to pursue courses aimed at obtaining a Watchkeeping Mate certificate. Richard aspires to advance to the role of 3rd officer with BC Ferries. Outside of his maritime pursuits, Richard finds enjoyment in consuming turkey lasagna.

Andrew William Whiston

Watchkeeping Mate Award of Excellence

Awarded to the Watchkeeping Mate student with the highest aggregate marks on the Transport Canada Examinations.

Andrew Whiston, currently serving as a deckhand with BC Ferries in Swartz Bay, embarked on his journey in the marine industry a decade ago with the aspiration of obtaining a Watchkeeping Mate certificate of competency. Last September, he commenced his studies at 51视频 and is now nearing completion of all the required courses for his first ticket. Andrew found his time at Camosun enjoyable and valued the expertise of his instructors. He eagerly anticipates returning to Camosun in the future to pursue his Chief Mate鈥檚 ticket.
